Once a year my parents take my brother and I on vacation, this year we went to Punta Cana for Thanksgiving break. We stayed at the Hotel Barcelo Bavaro Deluxe, an excellent hotel situated on one of the top ten beaches in the world. Overall, the vacation was wonderful, the only unfortunate part of our vacation was the weather being cloudy for a few days due to a storm which hit the Caribbean area the week prior. However, it was still beautiful and in the upper 80s all week.
We booked a hotel in Boston the night before our flight Saturday morning so that we wouldn’t have to drive two hours from Lewiston on Saturday morning. The direct flight from Boston to Punta Cana was just over 4 hours, we departed from Logan around 11:00am and arrived at the hotel around 5:00pm that day. I made sure to get my Starbucks fix and an Avocado BLT from Au Bon Pain before boarding the plane. Our hotel room was a Junior Deluxe Suite so my parents had their own room and my brother and I shared a bedroom with double beds for the week. We went to the buffet for dinner that night which had hundreds of choices, hence why I ate a plate of pasta in conjunction with a plate full of clams and sushi. Desert was the best part- the buffet boasted a chocolate fountain, pastries, truffles, ice cream, and mini cakes.
The second day was overcast with occasional showers, therefore most of the day was spent exploring the resort and lounging by the pool. I also walked the beach which was super relaxing considering the sand was a pure shade of white and the water turquoise blue. For dinner that night we went to the steakhouse restaurant, where I had a soup to start and then salmon for my main course. Later that night we attended the night show in the grand theater which was circus themed.
The third day the weather was sunny for the most part. For breakfast, I had an omelet with a crepe, kiwi, passion fruit, and a banana smoothie. I spent the day by the pool reading Khloe Kardashian’s Strong Looks Better Naked (for the third time this year). That night we went to Coral, the resort’s seafood restaurant. For dinner, I had clam chowder and lobster for my main course.
The fourth day was overcast once again. For breakfast, I had my usual- an omelet and fruit. This day I spent at the beach reading You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero, which is a really great motivational book that leaves you feeling empowered and refreshed. For dinner, we went to the Japanese restaurant which was hibachi style and offered vast amounts of sushi- making me very happy. Later that night we went to the coffee, rum, and cigar bar where you could get anything from Irish coffee to cappuccinos. The coffee was, dare I say it, better than Starbucks.
The fifth day was blue skies finally! I woke up early to do yoga on the beach and then met my mom up for breakfast. We spent the day at the pool/beach swiming and soaking up the sun. I was really proud of my dad this day because he finally recieved his scuba diving certification! This is something he had been aspiring to do for quite some time and had been putting in up to six hours a day since we had arrived at the resort to accomplish. That night we went to the Mexican resturant which had the besttttt margarittas. For dinner, I had quesadilas to start, then steak for my main course, and a tres leches cake for desert. After dinner we went back to the coffee, rum, and cigar bar to get our late night coffee fix and then made our way up to a roof top pool lounge which was beautifully lit up with tiki torches.
On the sixth day, the weather was beautiful, I spent a good part of the day at the beach getting my tan on and lounging on the built-in pool chairs. This day I did group water areobics in the pool to get a little exercise in to make up for all the food I was eating. That night we went to the seafood resturant again and I got salmon for dinner- shocking. Later that night we went to the night show and checked out the casino along with the resort night club.
My last full day on the resort my mom and I spent walking the beach. Later on that day, I went to the pool where I tanned and read Cosmopolitition magazines like it was my job. For dinner, we went to the restaurant situated on the resort’s golf club which had a gorgeous view of the grounds.
The eighth day was partly cloudy and depressing because it was time to fly back to Boston to snow and below freezing temperatures. Our flight departed around 1:00pm so I spent the morning getting breakfast, packing my bags, and walking the beach one last time. Arriving at Logan was depressing and that’s all I have to say. The End.
Taking a break is good for the mind, body, and soul. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to escape the stress of school and upcoming finals for even just a week. Even if you aren’t going on a tropical vacation, take time out of your day to pamper yourself. Whether that’s getting your nails done, calling a friend, reading a good book, or binge watching Netflix, it’s important to disconnect from the world sometimes. Best of luck with finals week, study hard it’ll be worth it in the end! xoxo
